Sam Sam is a private school teacher for Learn It in Chicago

“My students keep me on my toes. I could easily fill a book with anecdotes of how students have made me laugh, made me think, made me sad, and made me proud.”

What is your role in the organization?

I am a Title I teacher on the Academic Support team. I work with small groups of students in 30-40 minute segments throughout the school day at a private school in Chicago, my hometown. My students range from Kindergarten to 8th grade.

What is the best thing about your job?

It’s never dull! Working with a large age range (K–8th) means that I have to be ready to change gears and change mindsets several times a day.

Every day I have to engage students in a meaningful learning experience. When working with students who struggle in the regular classroom, I try to provide an environment where they feel comfortable, yet challenged. Many of my students come to me with little to no confidence in their abilities in the classroom. They are ready to give up, if they haven’t already. It’s a great challenge, but in the end the rewarding feeling is even greater.

What did you do prior to Learn It?

I taught English in Lima, Peru.

If you could sum up working for Learn It in three words what would they be?

Supportive. Positive. Rewarding.
