What is your role in the organization?
As a behavior technician, I assist the lead teacher and students throughout the school day on many different tasks. My main role in the classroom is to reinforce positive student behaviors. When behaviors arise in the classroom, I am there to assist the student and attempt to de-escalate any situation and problem solve through the issue with the student by offering other choices the student could make in future crisis situations.
What is the best thing about your job?
The most enjoyable part of my job is working with our wonderful students and watching them progress academically and behaviorally over the school year. Each day I come to work, I feel good about what we are doing for our students and look forward to the gains we can make each day. Watching a student gain control over their behavior is truly an empowering experience.
Our program is based on consistency but each child is unique, which makes every day at work interesting. I learn so much about our students each day and that gives me a better ways to help foster the learning experience within our classroom. Our team constantly discusses different approaches to work with our students, it is truly a reward and challenging experiences.
What advice would you offer potential candidates in your field?
If you have patience and a willingness to learn, then everything else will fall into place! Working as a behavior technician can be frustrating at times but the students make work so rewarding if you have patience and understanding. Take the time to get to know the students and their backgrounds on a clinical level.
If you could sum up working for Learn It in three words what would they be?
So much fun!
